Frequently asked questions

When does implantation happen?

Implantation typically happens 6–12 days after conception, with day 9 post-conception being the most common. The fertilized egg travels through the fallopian tube, becomes a blastocyst, and implants in the uterine lining.

What are the symptoms of implantation?

Most women feel no symptoms. Some experience light spotting (implantation bleeding), mild cramping, or breast tenderness. These are easy to miss or confuse with PMS. Heavy bleeding is not implantation — see your provider.

Can I take a pregnancy test the day of implantation?

Generally no. hCG (the pregnancy hormone) takes 2–3 days after implantation to reach detectable levels in urine. Wait at least 6–7 days after implantation for an early-detection test, or until your missed period for a standard test.

What is implantation bleeding?

Implantation bleeding is light spotting that occurs when the embryo implants in the uterine lining. It's typically pink or brown (not bright red), lighter than a period, and lasts only 1–2 days. It happens to about 25% of pregnant women.

How long does implantation take?

The implantation process itself takes 1–2 days. From start to finish (embryo attachment to fully embedded in uterine lining), the process is complete within 48 hours.

What happens after implantation?

Once implanted, the embryo begins producing hCG, which is what pregnancy tests detect. The placenta starts developing. By day 14 post-conception, hCG is usually detectable in blood; by day 17–21, in urine.
