Toddler kissing his mother's pregnant belly — Chinese gender predictor 2026

For entertainment only. The Chinese gender predictor has no scientific validity — peer-reviewed studies show it's ~50% accurate (same as a coin flip). For accurate gender determination, ask your healthcare provider about ultrasound (~18-22 weeks) or non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT, 10+ weeks).

Chinese chart prediction

It's a girl!

(Remember: this is folklore, not science)

How this prediction was calculated

Mother's Gregorian age
27 years
Mother's lunar age (Gregorian + 1)
28
Conception month
Month 2
Lunar conception month
Month 2

The chart looks up the cell where lunar age (28) meets lunar month (2). For exact lunar calendar conversion, dates near month boundaries may shift slightly.

Want a real answer?Anatomy ultrasound (18-22 weeks) is ~98% accurate. Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) from 10 weeks onward is >99% accurate via fetal DNA.

How the Chinese gender chart works

The Chinese gender predictor is a 24×12 chart that has been part of Chinese folk tradition for over 700 years. According to legend, it was found in a royal Chinese tomb. The chart claims to predict baby sex based on two inputs: the mother's lunar age at conception and the lunar month of conception.

To use the chart traditionally:

  1. Calculate mother's lunar age (Gregorian age + 1)
  2. Determine the lunar month of conception
  3. Find the cell where the row and column intersect
  4. The cell shows "Boy" (B) or "Girl" (G)

Frequently asked questions

Is the Chinese gender predictor accurate?

Peer-reviewed research shows the Chinese gender predictor is roughly 50% accurate — statistically the same as a coin flip. Despite popular claims of 70-90% accuracy, large studies (notably Villamor et al. 2010 in CMAJ) found no predictive validity. Use it for fun, not for major decisions.

How does the Chinese gender predictor work?

It uses a traditional 24×12 chart where rows represent the mother's lunar age (Gregorian age + 1) and columns represent the lunar month of conception. The chart cell at the intersection predicts boy or girl. The chart is over 700 years old and has cultural significance in Chinese tradition.

What is lunar age?

In Chinese tradition, a baby is considered 1 year old at birth (counting time in the womb) and turns 2 at the first lunar new year after birth. So lunar age is approximately your Gregorian age plus 1.

What is lunar month vs Gregorian month for conception?

The lunar calendar months don't perfectly align with Gregorian months — they shift by about 11 days each year. This calculator uses the Gregorian month as an approximation. For exact lunar calendar conversion, dates near month boundaries may shift by ±1 month.

When can I find out my baby's actual sex?

Anatomy ultrasound at 18-22 weeks is 95-99% accurate when the baby is in a good viewing position. Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) from 10 weeks onward analyses fetal DNA in the mother's bloodstream and is over 99% accurate. Both are widely available through your healthcare provider.

Why do some people say the Chinese chart was 100% accurate for them?

Confirmation bias and survivorship bias. With only two possible outcomes, the chart is 'right' about half the time by chance — and those are the stories that get shared online. People whose chart was wrong rarely write about it.
